Copernicus

Copernicus is a beautiful and dramatic crater, easily seen in a small telescope. Its scale is not immediately obvious to the naked-eye observer, however the crater measures 93km in diameter with a central mountainous peak of 1.2km in height. Clearly visible are what are known as ejecta rays, streams of debris which were scattered up to 800 km when the impact from a huge meteorite created the crater 800 million years ago. This print is made from a sketch using white charcoal on black paper rather than a photograph.
