The Lunar X
This gravure is made from a charcoal sketch rather than a photograph. The lunar X is a clair obscur effect caused by the angle of the sun’s rays casting shadows of ridges between the craters La Caille, Blanchini, and Purbach in a specific shape on the lunar landscape. It is visible for only three or four hours each month.
